100% agree. The average Mexican earns about $10/A DAY. You cannot show up to a market where people make that kind of money, in thousands of dollars worth of clothes (also be aware of the fact that you're already under a spotlight for being a foreign white woman) and then complain when someone follows you around? This ISN'T New York, and it's like you expect to not have to pay "New York prices" but you expect a New York experience. Also, you might have to defer to actual Mexicans on this one.

"and then complain when someone follows you around?" ... i dont think anyone deserves to be followed around and made to feel unsafe, regardless of their clothes or ethnicity. i dont think stalking is excusable behavior under any circumstances.

Well then you obviously have no understanding of power dynamics or cultural context and maybe shouldn't be traveling.

i shouldnt be traveling because i condemn stalking/intimidating strangers? respectfully, i dont think someone with that perspective is someone i'll continue to engage with in online dialogue

Also, you're not the offended one here. You're the one that's in the position of privilege. No one made this about ethnicity (lol "regardless of clothes") I used to enjoy your newsletter but sheesh this is embarrassing

yes. that's how it works when you go to a country that's made up of brown people. you should read a book or something before getting upset.

This post taught me two things: I must finally bite the bullet on silk pants, and that I’ll be scrolling flights to CDMX.

As one of your reader's from Mexico, I'm a little taken a back by your inflammatory commentary about your experience in Mexico city. Calling out the "sketchy types" in Mexico, and how you "purposely didn’t wear jewelry for this outing but I still, knowing better, put a sundress-shaped target on my own back!", the ignorance of your commentary is a bit stunning. If you are so afraid of the Mexican people maybe you shouldn't have gone. You have a platform, you are an affluent person that regularly spends thousands on designer wares, think twice before you speak with ignorance

Idk about you but any stranger who follows me around for an extended period of time earns themself the title of "sketchy type"!

I think you're stretching. She was followed then had her card details stolen for credit card fraud. Calling the people who stalked her "sketchy" or mentioning that you shouldn't wear jewelry or obvious tourist-y clothing if you don't want to be a target doesn't seem inflammatory or ignorant to me.

So helpful to see how you wear the clothes you write about and your travel-specific wardrobe in use-especially the Prada jacket in the wild. Your newsletter always stays so fresh Laura. Thank you!
