033: The best things fashion people wore this NYFW
Industry insiders on the pieces that made their outfits this season.
Freckled with cross-town Ubers, uptown subways, french-fried lunches at New York’s most storied establishments, consecutive 19º days, gossip, that third glass of wine, and baiting the paps, NYFW happened.
The city’s cultish, diehard favorites—Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Peter Do, Eckhaus Latta, Khaite—granted us yet another course from their long-fermented, umami tasting menus, while promising relative newcomers—Puppets and Puppets, Commission, Elena Velez—added salt, making their work feel even more them. And though they’re still small, Connor Mcknight, Judy Turner, Social Work, and Interior fed us, too.
Grabbing their own bites of the FW22 collections were editors, influencers, designers, publicists, producers, stylists, and buyers, firing across the city and adding texture to what we know as fashion week, they themselves a key ingredient.
At the risk of overworking this metaphor, I’ll get to the point and say that the best things I wore this week were this Aeron leather trench and the Acne waxed oilcloth tote I carried everywhere. “Loved the Proenza Schouler lug-sole Mary Janes I wore. Also the Nicole Saldana Clark shearling jacket in brown—it kept me from dying of frostbite, and it’s cute. I didn’t wear them together, I wore the Proenza’s to Saint Sintra, I believe, and the Nicole to Maryam and Dion Lee.”

“When it snows during fashion week and you have a North Face x Gucci puffer hanging on your clothing rack, you wear it. No questions asked. I got this coat as part of a really wonderful gifting opportunity pre-NYFW and it definitely came in handy. But more than just being warm and water-repellent in the snow, it also makes a big statement, no matter what you wear with it. I wore a pair of simple, black trousers with the coat, a vintage Chicago Bulls T-shirt from the 1996 NBA finals, and my go-to Bottega Puddle Boots. All in all, it was a fun piece to style and one I’ll wear for years to come.”

“I first discovered this designer when I went to Copenhagen Fashion Week a few weeks ago. Martin Asbjorn made these dark gray wool cargo shorts with an oversized fit that falls so loosely and effortless. I wore it on the first two days of NYFW and got photographed so many times in it. Because of how wide-legged they are, and they way they're cropped just below the knee, some people thought it was a skirt. I wore it with it with an Issey Miyake pleated shirt and Acne Studios coat.”

“I wore my favorite piece on the last day of Fashion Week: a Christopher John Rogers ribbed cardigan with his signature color blocking effect. I’m thrilled to see bright colors trending for winter; they’re pure serotonin and shouldn’t be reserved for just the summer months. CJR is obviously a wunderkind and his gowns / skirts are designed to be heirlooms, but I love that he also makes everyday, wearable pieces with that same effervescent energy. This was my look for the Collina Strada presentation which is always full of joy, so it felt like I was ending the New York run of shows on a high note.”
