047: The Memorial Day weekend sales are ON one
Plus Uniqlo x Marni, a Net-A-Porter blowout, and apologies in advance cause this is a really long email.
This mega email is so heavy with links it’s going to cut off in Gmail, but you can read it comfortably on web here. (Or just expand it at the bottom of the page.)
There are a lot of deals here—60 of them, not to mention 17 new launches—including SO MANY SALES BELOW THE FOLD, so don’t hold back on unfurling to see them all below.
What’s new
With a 1 item per customer policy, Uniqlo anticipates its Marni collection to go fast. As it should. Launching this past Thursday, the collection’s most markedly spring-primed styles were all but sold out by 10am ET, the floral and check shorts totally gone, and the matching short-sleeve button-downs scant. (The men’s items feel most “Marni” to me, but the women’s, especially the skirts, are still something.) Still, the baggy-legged trousers and nylon packable jackets have that ineffable joy and laden cool we love about the brand, as do the check board shorts and microflorals, still available in some sizes.
Yeezy Gap engineered by Balenciaga has arrived as a cohesive collection, finally. I wasn’t wholly sold on the Round jacket alone, and while I like the football shoulder tee, I’ve said before that it’s something I prefer from the universe of Willy Chavarria. But the lineup all together meets at the exact coordinates of Balenciaga and Yeezy in Gap drag, and it works. Highlights include a skintight muscle tank with a teensy logo at the center chest, a great option at $60 now that the Loewe logo tank is sold out everywhere.
There’s also: Everlane launches a linen collection, as does Carbon38; Luar launches a line of basics, Basico, which includes carrot-leg sweatpants and mutton-sleeve hoodies; Miaou finally expands into plus sizes via a collaboration with friend of the brand model Paloma Esseler (though not without some grading hiccups); Australian brand SIR., usually highly femme, debuts a genderless collection with model Jordan Barrett; AAPI jewelry brand SVNR collabs with The RealReal on a collection of upcycled beaded designs; Susan Alexandra enters bridal; CamperLAB introduces an espadrille boot in collaboration with EFI; Uniqlo teams up with Theory for another collection of smart tailoring and preppy basics; Simon Miller presents “The Hustle” pre-fall collection full of disco stripes and frosted wedges; HOKA x Free People Movement release an edit of workout wear; Laura Ashley and Batsheva collab on a second collection of remixed cottagecore; Zara partners with designer Rhuigi Villaseñor on RHU, an early-’90s inspired sportswear line; Rimowa made a suitcase that I really want again, a limited release of lilac and pale yellow cases for MDW; and Ghia re-releases its popular take on Nutella, Ghianduja, with an improved, creamier formula.
What’s on sale
Nearly 10,000 items are included in Net-A-Porter’s MDW sale, all marked down 30% with 30OFF. The discount may not be as subterranean as some competitors’ sales, but the scarcity of discount events on the site coupled with NAP’s legendary buys (designer exclusives, emerging brands) make this sale one of the first you should comb through when considering where to spend your weekend promo budget. Any of Marni’s iconic Fussbett sandals, a Mara Hoffman dress, or some untold new wear-all-the-time favorite from Loulou Studio are all good bets here.
As if I hadn’t already talked myself to death about the SSENSE sale, a few further areas to consider when shopping the quarterly blowout: The Everything Else section tends to get overlooked in the march through overwhelming numbers of pages within the Womenswear and Menswear sections (make sure you look through both categories for your favorite designers, as some items frustratingly do not appear separately—plus prices differ), and the homeware and beauty edits are among the best, with discounts on everything from Tekla to Byredo. Also, a gentle reminder to stay signed into your account as Private Sale items are also being replenished and new top-tier designer goods added weekly. (See last week’s and the week before’s sends for more on the sale.)
Completing the trifecta, Nordstrom’s Half-Yearly Sale kicked off this week, and naturally I headed straight to SPACE to see how the site’s most progressive brands were being discounted. Sunnei, YanYan, and Cecilie Bahnsen are found at great discounts and favorable prices. But the best deals can be found elsewhere in the designer sale, where Jil Sander, Stella McCartney, and Brock Collection have an extra 25% tag hanging off their already up to 75% off discounts.
Uniqlo’s Arigato event is focused on its core collection, and collabs aside, it’s primed for re-upping on the t-shirts that can’t be improved upon. There are also a lot of categories to explore, like denim, workout wear, and men’s button-downs, one because we trust Uniqlo, and two, because they’re so cheap right now.
After already taking advantage of SKIMS being on sale at SSENSE, I went ahead and bought a few more styles at SKIMS’ own Bi-Annual Sale, happening now. Stock, as always, is a minefield, but the 5 for $35 deal on undies that usually cost $22+ each was worth digging for. I made off with a handful of Di Petsa/Supriya Lele-esque twist briefs, thongs, and bras I plan to wear poolside.
Some people (me) have a soft spot for SKIMS. Others, for Good American. It’s not exactly dueling tip jars, but if you’re voting Kourt, you can get 20% off sitewide with MAY20 and an extra 40% off markdowns, automatically taken at checkout.
Everlane’s MDW sale includes over 400 styles starting at 25% off and reaching as high as 40%. Plenty of jeans, skirts, casual dresses, and swimwear to be found here, a relief not to see a bunch of slow winter styles being presented as deals.
Cuup’s Summer Swim Event is extending $50 off swimwear purchases of $200+, and $75 off $300, which translates a little awkwardly to one top and two bottoms to unlock the first deal, or two tops and two bottoms for the second.
Mansur Gavriel just launched its sale for up to 40% off on bags, shoes, and charming little leather accessories.
And Glossier’s having a pretty good sale considering their limited reductions in the past—20% off all skincare, makeup, body, and fragrance with FOG20.
The Outnet’s sale rivals Net-A-Porter’s at up to 86% off, but of course things are going fast—Margiela, Sid Neigum, and Missoni are among the most discounted.
Matchesfashion is up to 50% off, with new designers just added. (Khaite, Marni, and JW are all up there.)
Moda Operandi’s Designer Sale is back at up to 80% off. (See Christopher Esber, Peter Do, Rosie Assoulin at the top.)
Ganni is up to 40% off at the moment, with about 700 items included in the sale.
