Ah! I found this so touching Laura. And refreshing, your writing about once being intimidated to go into the store. That feeling of being an outsider, even if you’re technically “in.” I think it is very much a part of being in your 20s, figuring out where you belong. There is something quite powerful about being able to walk into a space and realize, “yeah, I’m on the other side of that now.”
wonderful essay! very evocative even though i only dressed up and had a solo mnz pilgrimage once. As soon as I saw myself in the mirror next to the other ladies browsing i hated my ill-fitting silk pajama blouse but was also inspired
