Today’s send is a mailbag. What shopping has landed on my stoop lately? The volume and frequency of arrivals has made me something close to shy about sharing it here, but then I realized IF NOT ME, WHO?
First. My Colleen Allen FW25 pre-order arrived (I’d thought about it at least once a week since paying my deposit in the spring)—the fitted fleece (made with North Face Polartec) is set for THE-ism: “THE Colleen Allen fleece,” or really, just “THE fleece.” We’ll all need to coordinate who gets to wear theirs when.
So, too, did my Aflalo pieces—silk-lace basketball capris and knit pants that are as silver as imaginable. And a couple pieces from Another Tomorrow that are as pared-back and versatile as Aflalo is outrageous and bon vivant: a sculptural black bustier and a black viscose button down.
Yesterday morning, I ordered six pairs of Kye Intimates underwear at the brand’s now-over archive sale (which I shared in the chat), in my ongoing effort to overturn my entire underwear collection with its Essential String Bikinis and Standard Thongs.
Two days before that, on my way to catch a shuttle to Philip Johnson’s New Canaan Glass House (to celebrate the re-issue of this original-to-the-space lamp), I made a pit stop at La Garçonne and tried on that Lemaire cropped toggle jacket I’ve long held under consideration. It was the last one, and I needed it—it looked phenomenal on me—but I wasn’t about to lug the thing to Connecticut and back, so I pulled out my phone and ordered it from the ecomm site while I was still hanging out in the store, spritzing myself with Perfumer H samples.
But that’s the winter shopping talking. Fall’s all about leather obviously. I’ve been wearing a new leather jacket gifted to me by this Shanghai-based brand Keigan that’s about to launch and doesn’t even seem to have a website set up yet. It’s a super buttery oxblood leather that falls like heavy silk (I sold an old The Row leather jacket because it didn’t behave in this exact way). Then there’s the Acne Studios lambskin track pants that similarly accomplish the fabricky sway I always hoped for in a tailored pair and never found. BUT! These vintage Helmut Lang 5-pocket leather pants were exactly what I was always looking for (and, yeah, they were $75). These men’s ones are similar.
I’m waiting on a Tigra Tigra dress from a flash sale earlier this week. I’ve got a Wales Bonner cart full (and a separate TRR cart, too) after this morning’s Hermés news that I’m almost ready to act on (this brooch…do I finally get it?).
Also, importantly, I ordered three tweed things from eBay to shorten and splatter with blood. Halloween is coming.
With contributions from Maya Kotomori.
What’s new
The last time we experienced fantasy altogether as a culture, as a mass event, was with Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, which came out nearly 20 years ago. Remember the trailer? That sequence taught me things were allowed to look like that. On the occasion of a retrospective of the film at London’s Victoria and Albert museum, Manolo Blahnik, shoe designer then and shoe designer now, created an exclusive Net-A-Porter capsule of rococo satin appliqué and velvet pumps in fondant pastels and witchy black and gray. The museum-caliber heels are in the $1,000-2,000 range and all designed by Manolo the man himself, now 82 years old, a fact worth meditating on in the Giorgio Armani-shaped vacuum left after the legendary designer’s passing this month.
I don’t think “French girl style” warrants the ocean of personal essays it inspires, because actually it hasn’t changed since Jane Birkin’s era (Marie Antoinette’s notwithstanding). It’s a kind of classic—one with jeans and animal prints and unbrushed hair—and always better worn without comment. Reformation just re-upped its collaboration with Camille Rowe after a sell-out first season in a capsule that harnesses all the signatures of the French girl-style canon: soft suiting, romantic lace camisoles, ‘70s floral party dresses, a very attractive purse that makes sense in work settings and on the drinks table… It’s going to sell out again, of course, to a bunch of shoppers who are smart enough to know the pieces speak for themselves.
Heritage prep gets the stylist treatment in the new Alex Mill x J.Press collaboration collection. Think: if you combined all of Bob Balaban’s bespectacled roles in Wes Anderson roles, with an added rugby-stripe (in the case of the Stripe Shaggy Dog Sweater).
Miu Miu Automne’s proposition for fall is a view of the ‘90s pulled straight from the brand’s own Pinterest archive pics and RealReal remnants still circulating. Not the sleek minimalist ‘90s of Rachel Green, though, the latest edit from the Italian luxury label leans grunge with rich brown leathers (pocket nappa leather bag, waxed shearling blouson jacket), funky knits (wool crew-neck sweater, cashmere cardigan), and even a pair of poplin pajama pants that double as under and outerwear.
“Holiday” has a dual meaning in the e-tail world, signifying parties, galore. This phenomenon takes the shape of some sumptuous Jamie Haller shoes from the Holiday Collection (which drops now), a plum-burgundy coat from Leset’s latest drop, or any new holiday arrival from Attersee, because seriously, how can they find so many different shades of gray?
This isn’t Balenciaga’s first Rodeo; it’s actually its second. For the bag’s second year anniversary with the French house, the Rodeo gets a croc-embossed leather look for both the medium, small, and mini sizes. Jury is still out on the fate of a potential Rodeo Croc in the large size, but we’ll have to take that one up with Pierpaolo Piccioli.
They say jewelry is the best gift from one partner to another when the former wants to get out of the metaphorical dog house. This week, you’d almost hope for four separate slights that need redeeming. See: Sophie Bille Brahe’s Histoire d’Ensembles, her SS26 collection based on her three most iconic silhouettes, the Escargot, the Fleur, and the Amis, and Lié Studio’s new collection drop, a tight eight pieces inspired by minimalist signets available in both gold and silver. At Present just also released the latest installment of Charlotte Groeneveld’s line inspired by her Dutch heritage with modern interpretations of nature, and St. Agni now carries a six-piece collection designed with Belén Kröl, which includes a silver hair pin among more classic rings, necklaces, and bracelets.
If you were to explain how Earth fashion works to an alien from a distant planet, the best way would be to chart trends from high-street retailers. Zara’s FW25 Studio Collection is a little pastoral through this romantic dress, a tiny bit equestrian with these perforated leather boots, and dare I say still hanging on to last year’s high-fashion-school-girl thing, as seen through sweet ruffled collars and this box pleat skirt.
Moda Operandi presents the Courtney Grow Edit, a special curation from the Utah-turned-NYC tastemaker whose approach to personal style is better seen and shopped than understood; in short, think these three i-words: intuitive, irreverent, inquisitive. Her edit includes everything from silk mini dresses from The Row to Colleen Allen velvet shawls.
There’s also: Some newness from GWYN as structured as it is work-appropriate (see: the imogen jacket); the Blossoming Camellia candle, an exquisitely floral collaboration between Flamingo Estate and Monica Lewinsky, of all prominent woman figures (last time she did a brand deal, it was with Reformation in 2024); luxury yak wool brand Norlha’s latest collection apparel for children; and Loro Piana’s curated exclusives only at Bergdorf Goodman.
What’s on sale
Kallmeyer just added new styles to its sale section, and the range breadth comparable to Daniel Day Lewis’s acting career. We’re talking about layerable bottoms like the Sutton Pleated Skirt, outerwear like the Lottie Field Jacket, and statement pieces like the Esme Tuxedo Shirt, all priced anywhere between 15-20% off their original retail prices.
CO Collections just dropped its FW25 lookbook, and announced a friends and family sale for its Pre-Fall collection. It’s 30% off select styles, and yes, matching sets and shoes are included.
The L’Ensemble archive sale is in full swing, laden with a coterie of styles past and present across Guidi footwear, Tove outerwear, and ready to wear from the likes of Proenza Schouler and Y’s by Yohji Yamamoto, marked down 40%. There’s an extra 20% off the curated selection with ARCHIVE20.
Nordstrom’s end-of-season sale starts now, including all departments (yes, that means Home, Designer, and Beauty, too). There are even pre-owned Hermès Kellys included in the selection, perhaps the best like-new quality for the price.
There’s also: A secret 30% discount at RiRa Objects (those colorful, orb-y glass bowls) with LOYAL30; beauty-heads get 20% off markdowns starting now for Credo Beauty; and a Norma Kamali popup sale featuring up to 75% off.
