388: NYFW Day 2 / Coldwater Creek Chic

Magasin’s pop-up Fashion Week newsletter-within-a-newsletter, where we go on the ground to suss out hot shopping gossip from scenes of interest: New York Fashion Week, Day 2.
Weather report
66ºF / 18º C — the actual weather report this week will likely be enormously dull for readers (it’s basically LA weather every day) and a huge relief for anyone running show to show. I will say, to take a cultural temp check, moods remain high while few shows have actually gone down, ergo, less lambasting of the creative vacuum that happens under threat of recession when commercial is king.
Itinerary

9a Westview Ventures ‘Power Breakfast’ at Raf’s
11a Mansur Gavriel preview — got to check out the fall collection, which landed on site this morning, from which I’m especially drawn to these East-West bowling bags. Coming for pre-spring, a mini patchwork leather evening bag that fits just so under the arm.
12p Literary Sport preview — I think I’m finally ready to appreciate the “sport” end of Literary Sport’s game, the brand’s technical arm offering a pretty compelling assortment for runners who can throw down a fit (exemplified by design director Jackie McKeown, who layered the pieces with APLOMB—styled above with a corded stone necklace and Prada mules).
5p Live Taping of Lauren Sherman’s Fashion People Podcast — featuring guests Kristen Naiman of The RealReal (the night’s sponsor), Marisa Meltzer (whose new book on Jane Birkin is coming soon),
of Long Live, and , Line Sheet’s retail correspondent, who got into it about the state of resale.7p ShopMy NYFW Social Club at The Corner Store
7p Métier store opening cocktail — more on this coming soon, but welcome to the neighborhood, Melissa Morris!
7p Fendi Spy Bag relaunch cocktail at Chez Fifi
8p J.Crew at 190 Bowery residency launch dinner — featuring a preview of Flynn McGarry’s new restaurant Cove and a live performance by Blood Orange. The event kicked off J.Crew’s residency at a historic NYC building (you know it as the Supreme store, I remember it as Totokaelo, we are not the same), and it kind of felt like a ‘90s catalog Sleep No More where B.J.Novak offers you a riddle in one room and Chloe Fineman asks Ryan Philippe what “prodigal” means in the other (that actually might have happened).

Shopping gossip

Andrew J.S., a literary guy about town and the mind behind Éditions Mag—he also shot In House’s lookbook and curates the reading materials at Literary Sport—is breaking into homewares with a sconce. Originally designed for Regimes Des Fleurs and inspired by a flower, I suspect his editorial inclinations betray him because the light fixture reads more, to me, like a book.
Fran Miller (of the skincare line F.Miller, but she’s also co-creative director of Literary Sport) was wearing some fabulously minimal, slightly wedged flip-flops that I had to ask about. Tevas! Go figure. And they’re $24. She removed the label, which is the real pro move here. I noticed they’re the same model also used in the brand’s ecomm shots.
Everyone’s talking about Jennifer Lawrence’s style lately, but only my old colleague from InStyle, Sam Reed, had the clarity of vision to describe it as “Coldwater Creek chic.”
Lauren Sherman’s “State of Resale” live taping obviously lent itself to the divulgence of valuable search terms (there were a lot of stock market comparisons): Marisa mentioned the Marc Jacobs-era Louis Vuitton Sofia bag pegged to Coppola’s new doc on the designer. Lauren predicts an impending spike in Dior Bar jacket sales. Kristen says she preys on cultish small brands like Indress—everyone had a reaction when this name came up—and buys them for super low when they upload.
J.Crew send every one of its dinner guests home last night with a red, monogrammed barn jacket in brushed chino. One in the wild might be a good indicator you’re looking at a Fashion Person™.

I dream of the Marc/Sofia/LV bag!!!
Fun dispatch. In a past life as a software engineer I’d end up in NYC this week, holed up in a Fashion District hotel—different lane, same buzz you’re describing. Best season of the year to be in NYC. Hope you’re having a great run out there.
