Welcome to Magasin’s pop-up newsletter-within-a-newsletter, where we’ll be covering shoppable observations from scenes of interest: Copenhagen’s 3 Days of Design, Days 2 + 3.
Weather report
62ºF / 17º C — ran through Copenhagen’s 3 Days of Design at 2x speed, as I only arrived in time to pack in 1.5 days of the fair. Luckily, the sun sets at 10pm and rises at 3:30a, so it’s not like sleep took up much of that.
Itinerary
June 19
12p DWR x Louis Poulsen lunch at Admiralgade 26 — at which we got to customize our own portable Panthella lamps; I already have one in white-chrome, and opted for a full burgundy, the collab-exclusive color.
2p Bleo x Muller Van Severen preview — a tile collaboration; adored the swimming-pool blue and was impressed to see the lineup of past collaborators: John Pawson, Joself + Anni Albers Foundation, Margaret Howell, etc.
5p Frama Block Party
7p Charlotte Taylor “Home From Home” installation at Noura Residency — tableaus of apartment scenes styled with pieces from Teget, Garance Vallée, Mo Tong Yang, Frederik Gustav…the project was made shoppable through a website, extemely my kind of thing…
9p Niko June x Gem Home at Cafe Niko
11p other circle party
June 20
10a Breakfast at Sonny
11a Coffee with Philip Seerup of Service Projects — loved getting the context on this tableware brand (I have evangelized its cutlery on several occasions): Phillip used to be a pro badminton player and launched the brand only a year and a half ago; it’s just him and four contractors making really thoughtful, almost diner-style (in both look and usefulness) kitchen tools. I left with a spiral steel ice cream cup.
11:30a Magniberg showroom
12p Carlo Nason at Form Portfolios
12:30p Bankston Architectural x YSG Studio
1p HAY House
1:30p Stopped for wine at Ved Stranden 10
3p Amerikakaj exhibition — multi-exhibitor space featuring cc-tapis, Brandt, MDF Italia, BassamFellows, others
3:30p Lee Broom installation at Asia House
4p Alice Folker Gallery — showing the Ingo Maurer lamp I want
4:30p De La Espada exhibition at Garde Hvalsøe showroom — featuring lighting from Ladies & Gentlemen Studio, curated by Pernille Vest ALSO featuring live mini pizza making and nice wine and a great all-around closing party. Was earnestly very thrilled to finally check out DLE in person, there’s a bed of theirs I’ve been chasing and can confirm the wood and craftsmanship has presence.
6p Armadillo showroom
8:30p Dinner at FAR — food just doesn’t taste like this anywhere else. Neither does wine.
Shopping gossip

I couldn’t shut up this “week” about all the great portable lamps. It makes sense: They’re an entry-level item that’s enormously useful—for illuminating an outdoor space or wire-free light where plugs are sparse or just unsightly (
and I both have the portable Pantherella, he uses his on the balcony, mine’s in my unrenovated bathroom). Besides Louis Poulsen’s version, I also spotted excellent ones from Lee Broom (a single glass brick-inspired cube like those found in his Chant chandeliers); Fucina Frammenti (made using Murano glass castoff cuts); and Carlo Nason (a removable orb set in a cup aptly named Gelato). Was chatting with Flynn McGarry and it seems pretty clear that, with the approaching opening of his new restaurant Cove, the future of Gem is looking more and more like a lifestyle brand. His antique collecting, marketplace curation, widening of merch… Gem is now an object project.
Seeing the very Scandi wood joinery style (which Google tells me is a “box joint”) brought me back to my childhood. Sheila Llovet and Charlotte Taylor collaborated on a box joint dining table shown at her exhibition Home From Home, and Garde Hvalsøe applies it elegantly in kitchen cabinetry. I’ll always think of my mother’s office, which housed multiple Ikea Moppe units stuffed with sewing tools and fabric scraps.
The founders of Tekla and Magniberg (often uttered in the same sentence by sheet shoppers) both came from Acne Studios at the same time and were besties. Now, they’re not talking at all. The competition runs deep, and while I started the week as a “forever Tekla-er,” having run my fingers through its counterpart and found it way softer and more sumptuous than the ecomm shots would suggest, I might have to diversity my collection.
Hot Danish couples are wearing Flatlist sunglasses. You can tell them by their straight-back, unhooked stems.
