So! Now that I’m officially out of the United States, I’m finally ready to talk swimwear. I got my first tan lines of the season two days ago in this J.Crew balconette-bikini set (on sale currently, FYI). Olympia Gayot—the brand’s CD—told me she’s most into this style, which is an exact replica of their iconic 1993 shape.
Magasin’s brain trust, in this case the other contributors to our summer style matrix, also had thoughts on the best swimwear. For Bailey Hunter, that’s this Fisch leopard print bikini. Ana Kras keeps coming back to a past-season Araks style and a vintage black Gianfranco Ferre thong bottom, worn on its own (she says: “I am often topless”…love that). Yael Aflalo name checks Alaïa, Tropic of C, and a sparkly Prada number.
Two called out Lido. Lydia Zacharis brilliantly dubbed it “the young Eres,” which is just so on the nose, and Carmen De Baets mentioned it alongside Nu Swim and Kye Intimates. A reader survey I conducted (i.e. an IG Story poll and consulting the chat) was also pretty keen on this corner of the swim market: got 7 replies for Lido, 3 for Nu, 6 for Eres (the biggest purists out there), 4 for Hunza G, 3 for Hakea, 4 for Left on Friday (usually a hit among the big-busted girls). Also among those mentioned were Siren Basics, Belle the Label (launched new styles today), Bondi Born (great for one pieces, apparently), Mikoh, Youswim, Dolla, Alipo (I have one and can confirm), Baythe, Solid & Striped, Oneone, Frankies Bikinis, Elce, Elysiian, Heavy Manners, Loro Piana for the guys, Vetchy, MINÉ (seems to be all sold out, but looks chiiic), “vintage” Mara Hoffman, Julliet, Gimaguas, Pale Swimwear, Onia, Norma Kamali, Araks, and Toteme.
In my own suitcase, I have uhhhh three Lido bikinis, this white ribbed Cinquantotto, and two of them from separate collabs—one from last year with French brand Soeur, and a beaded one I just got from the newly released Lié Studio partnership. Might be redundant, but I also packed a Sara Cristina cowrie shell-adorned set. My forever fave is the Fruity Booty spiral bikini that’s only half in stock now (#neverforget the backgammon sarong). A sexy Nu Swim strapless maillot (I really want it in the new Hibiscus Cream) and a Norma Kamali with an ultra-low back I’m using more as an underpinning. And I’m keen to pick up something colorful from Clemence Mountain when I’m back, surely/hopefully to leave again shortly after.
What’s new
$: The unsaid piece of last week’s neck-dressing exercise is, of course, the fragrance you dab on your pulse points before you leave the house. It’s arguably the whole point of wearing clothes to that emphasis—to create a multi-sensory experience that draws in eyes first, then noses, to the delicate area. Balmain Beauty sent over a selection of their scents a few weeks back, which I’ve been rotating through and assigning to various moods: Rouge is my most day-meets-night, Carbone as the aromatic answer to a big white button down, Blanc Galaxie like stepping out of a hotel shower.
I’ve been talking/thinking about Aflalo lately and have noticed others doing so too (a Times profile doesn’t hurt). It’s one thing that the brand’s closing in on the disappearing middle-price point, but what actually matters is that the clothes are good. The new season just came out, and it’s highly wearable: antique-silk basketball-length shorts are major, the harem-y Lolana pant Yael mentioned in our summer matrix finally landed…lots more. The brand’s also just released a lab-grown diamond capsule with
under the moniker LMC, and it’s very her—gems woven into camp lanyards kind of thing. I love seeing these longtime friends and collaborators work together again.I spent one freezing night in Amagansett before circling back and heading straight to Puglia, and I don’t think my resistance to the Hamptons is long for this world. North Eastern Americana must be reaching some kind of crescendo after years of dominating our aesthetic imaginations, I imagine? Amid the made-for-tv CBK scandal this week, Old Stone Trade released its Edition VI: New England capsule, drawing upon the craft, insouciance, twee, and tongue-in-cheek that define the look, garnished with a moodiness that sets OST apart—a rolled boatneck fisherman sweater, duck canvas tote made from repurposed yacht materials, collected vintage faded red shorts…all very on the nose!
J.Hannah walks forward its collaboration with the Met with a jewelry capsule that actualizes the gold, gemmed rings and pendants found in the museum’s archive.
Men’s releases
After being teased by founder Sigurd Pantalon recently, a limited drop of deadstock and surplus-fabric shirts from mfpen landed today, another excuse to visit the site and reflect on how strong the new collection is.
The Abercrombie-era redux brand Raimundo Langlois delivered a rare drop that counts these layered cargo shorts and double-collar polo.
Check out the heel on this Another Aspect loafer. Enlightened!
Home releases
Andy Cohen is moving and having legendary designer Billy Cotton reimagine his new apartment, opening up the door for him to list a handful of previously owned pieces on 1stDibs for a Pride-pegged campaign.
H&M Home wisely taps Gabriella Khalil’s Palm Heights for a co-designed summer collection.
What’s on sale
I’m writing today’s send from Copenhagen, so it’s fitting to share my favorite Danish denim brand Jeanerica is on sale. I have something like three pairs of pants and three pairs of shorts (the Belem can’t be beat), and everyone who owns anything from the brand consistently ranks them in the top three for jeans. A whole bunch of core stuff is 40% off.
Saks’ Designer Sale is underway—a reliable source for household luxury (Burberry, Ralph Lauren Collection), but also tucked-away pieces from incumbents like Liberowe (how fabulous is this dress!!!) and Heirlome (this dress toooooo), up to 70% off.
A Baserange sale always hits because their prices are so good to begin with. SS25 is almost entirely 30% off at the moment, including many of the Indre pants (a world-class cut—I just picked up a crunchy linen version).
There’s also: This send is getting a little long-winded, so I’ll cut things here and say that there are sizable sales also underway at Else, Strathberry, Bevza. Men and women can also make out well at &Daughter, Studio Nicholson, and Colbo’s sales.
