350: Do the Olsens even sweat?
Plus my Bally jacket is $700 off, the bride wears High Sport, and R+W Guild's first ever sale, HERE FIRST.
It’s been a minute. I’ve been setting up advanced filters for my inbox and painting my house. Thank you for noticing!
In today’s newsletter: decoding the SSENSE coupon; two brands that want to be the gym’s The Row; the bride wore High Sport; the fight that broke out at the Lauren Manoogian sample sale; my Bally leather jacket with the lil peplum for 25% off, and Magasin-exclusive access to Roman and Williams Guild’s first ever sale. Ever!
What’s new
In the last nine months, two separate brands have cropped up with almost identical value propositions: activewear for people who wear The Row. I think this is fashion’s current crutch the way that SAAS was plagued with “the Airbnb of…” and DTC couldn’t shake “the Warby Parker of…” though it’s muddled by the fact that The Row takes many of its designs and fabric inspiration from actual sportswear (horseback riding shirt, track jacket). Literary Sport arrived first, and this week, H-O-R-S-E followed suit. Their creative direction is somewhat similar, but their paths split on textiles; the former prides itself on Japanese technical materials, the latter is 100% plant fiber. The question that the converging pitch decks ultimately begs is what the Olsens themselves wear to work out—
reported that MK wears Tailored Sportsman breeches and quarter zips when she rides; and here’s Ash in a Todd Snyder polo that looks like a cooldown top from H-O-R-S-E; there aren’t many other clues—I think the only thing we know definitively is that it’s neither of these two brands. Don’t get me wrong, their lines are quite nice! I just think it’s hiiiigh time we unhitch some wagons lest The Row’s ass collapse under their weight.Tory Burch is waging the Reva flat’s comeback tour like Napoleon. So far it’s gotten the
treatment, an SSENSE front page (love the revolving door concept), and a seeding campaign that will have me and the girls making stars with our matching ballerinas outside of Le Dive this summer. Not only did SSENSE get the exclusive on the revived style, it scooped up a bunch of new-in runway styles like the flame prints and wrap dresses in colors not even avails on the brand’s own dot com yet.Would you get married in Kick Flares? SSENSE seems to think some of you would. The retailer’s 2025 bridal exclusives count pieces from High Sport, maker of the contentious pant (their newer collections are trying to shake that pigeonhole, I think it’s working), plus Colleen Allen, Vivienne Westwood, Super Yaya, LII…a salad of conventional and cutting-edge options that brides are likely to lean to today. More “traditionally,” Danielle Frankel’s X collection also stirs up the urge to wed again, and again, and again.
This week’s handbag radar registers Proenza Schouler’s new handkerchief-like Tetra Bag; Lemaire’s moulded leather Cartridge Bag in collaboration with Il Bussetto (the collab sold out, but Il Bussetto’s own versions are aplenty at a lesser price) AND its new XL Croissant Bag in old-school canvas; Métier’s “Closer Collection” of slouchy suede briefcases; Carven’s satin tote bag née Jeanne; a suite of nylon and leather bags from Studio Nicholson; Jil Sander’s new obvious hit (it was overdue for another), the El Dorado; and only three of five limited-drop Florist New York Bowling Bags remain.
Just as much action on the footwear front lately: Birkenstock 1774 imagines its Arizona Cosny in nylon; line drawing-light flip-flop brand TKEES collaborated with J.Crew on a jelly sandal; Jacquemus and Timberland co-release a chunky boat shoe (in butter yellow, no less); one more look at Le Monde Beryl’s SS25, which adds an embroidered moccasin as a viral contender; and a new collection from Hvoya, which itself is like the Ukrainian LMB, presenting crochet flats and animal-print ponyhair heels (plus bags and trenches).
There’s also: The first Ray Ban under new Creative Director A$AP Rocky trickles in—three pairs that hit enhance on classic styles; Reformation launched pajamas that double as swim cover ups that double as clothes; Prada can now be found on MyTheresa; buttoned-up men’s shoe brand J.M. Weston gets the sacai treatment; and bridging the gap from fashion to interiors (like we’re about to do…right here), Athena Calderone collabs with John Hardy on her first ever jewelry offering.
Home releases
I’ve lost count of the number of screenshots I’ve taken of Elora Joshi’s ingenious bedroom hook system (visible in her mirror selfies), so it’s apt the creative has finally formalized the design in a joint project with her beau Andrew J. Greene under the moniker Joshi/Greene. The Rail Storage System—modular aluminum pegs that can host a variety of hanging objects like mirrors—is the first offering from the duo, and I’m very eager to see what’s next.
Olive Atelier’s first furniture collection—of Deco-like outdoor seating and tables—is the wistful French garden counterpart to its one-of-a-kind stone sinks and planters. The rustic villa suggested in its primitive-style accessories is that much more complete now, and at prices that don’t relegate them to an indefinite wishlist.
Saint Laurent’s Salone tour de force coaxed some great French mid-century designs out of the archives, including a previously un-produced Charlotte Perriand banquette. The furniture is made-to-order and frankly most likely out of reach for even the highest earning readers of this newsletter (for measure, a Ginori 1735 x Gio Ponti porcelain plate from SL Design is $6,500). More pragmatically collectible is this book cataloging Perriand’s photographic archives and sketches for $120.
What’s on sale
New York interiors icon Roman and Williams Guild, whose hallmark casual refinement defines a slice of Soho that encompasses the brand-owned La Mercerie and Guild Gallery, is offering the Magasin community EXCLUSIVE access to shop its first-ever sale. The hosting and tableware deals are deep (up to 50% off in some cases) as they are fleeting (it’s first-come, first-serve), making early access all the more consequential before the sale opens to the public this Friday. With my first dibs, I picked up a set of engraved crystal glasses from Florence’s Moleria Locchi for $110 under retail, and may still circle back for this dramatic indigo-dyed tablecloth from RWGuild’s in-house line that’s down from $530 to $265. I may even swing by the sale on Howard Street in person Friday since I’m pretty certain it’s going to be a big industry scene and a pro-social excuse to pick up an extra armful on the low.
My perfect Bally leather jacket that I just got in Milan is now 25% off on the site. So is a bunch of stuff…like almost everything as far as I can tell. Crazy deal, it’s less than what I paid after the VAT refund.
Ok let’s talk about that 25% off SSENSE coupon finally. I touched on it in the final Salone dispatch to highlight some interiors stuff—by the way, the Ferm stool I bought arrived in a little box, it was so easy, would definitely shop furniture from here again—but there are a lot of very warm welcomes to be had for names on the womenswear fronts: Martiniano heels, a Jil Sander bag that is better than anything The Row has right now, rimless Saint Laurent aviators from the runway, Issey washing machine knits…and men’s: a pajama-y Auralee check shirt, JW chinos that look great in fit, a Colbo tote bag, and that Carter Young fireman jacket.
Orior—the Irish furniture brand that was a fave from Salone—is running a stock sale on its dually whimsical and impressive designs…$6,000 chairs with big personalities and intimidating credentials, credenzas in the mid-five digits boasting curves and colors your eyes don’t entirely believe…all slashed by a factor of thousands.
There’s also: New markdowns at the Tory Burch sale count the pierced flats, feathery bags and skirts, and those runway T-straps.; a MyTheresa flash sale and bonus discount of 20% for orders $350+; it paid to wait on buying this Wales Bonner skirt, now on sale at the brand’s archive alongside a lot of other cutting deals; and Maimoun’s flash sale reignites my yearning for this Baserange clown suit…though an Extreme Cashmere henley is probably “wiser.”
Clothing thought: If you’re in New York this weekend…Lauren Manoogian is hosting a once-every-two-years sample sale. The chat has asked about this very moment previously, and now it’s happening. It’s going to be crazy—a fight broke out at the last one! Saturday + Sunday at 9 West 8th St. Bring a book and a hat. Bring a friend or make one in line. If you’re out of town…the brand’s online sale page was recently updated with a really lovely edit of FW pieces (and the SSENSE coupon extends to these).
