263: The Row's Alexia is coming in a mini
Also on my wishlist—Marie Adam-Leenaerdt slides, Leset's Laura tee, and vintage Prada shorts "just for fun."
I’ve invented and reinvented this column a million times over (remember Broadsheet? remember Market Research? AMA?), and who’s to say it won’t get reinvented again. The gist of it is: I look at a lot of online retail and make note of many things that strike and delight me along the way. Sometimes, the weight of these wishlists becomes too much to bare alone, and all I want is to share them with someone(s) who’d appreciate it and say, wow, look at these cool things that talented people came up with!
I didn’t plan on sending out a newsletter today (on a Friday afternoon? Substack suicide), but then all of a sudden I had a draft open in Chrome, an untitled project in the works in Photoshop, and enough ecomm tabs open to noticeably stall the functionality of my Mac. Today, I’m thinking about this franchise under the framework of an “Open Wishlist,” as in, I open up the wishlists I’m racking up across the web to you or whoever. Tomorrow, who knows? Who cares! Here they are, the many beautiful things.
SSENSE
I’ve been passively seeking out a pair of straight-leg, non-scrunchie sweatpants of the right weight and cut (the closest I’ve come is with these Muji ones that aren’t in my size and these Eternes that may be slightly too narrow), but since seeing these Lauren Manoogian pants in my favorite ever double knit of theirs, I’m starting to wonder if this may be what I’ve been wanting all along; vintage Ralph Lauren still has me pinned on clingy gray knits like this Isa Boulder bodysuit; need to know more about this narrow version of Leset’s Margo tee called Laura :) ; The Row’s version of the hotel slipper is soooo literal—I both fear it and respect it; I’m sure I’ve mentioned this Auralee backless dress recently, but I’m now thinking it would be a very demure, very mindful side boob moment for me this fall; Tove pants I could hem my way into a lifelong relationship with; and Marie Adam-Leenaerdt FINALLY dropped the swim prints eeeeeeee.
Bergdorf Goodman
Ralph Lauren in my brain again, but this time it’s new Ralph behind this sheeny, close-cut dress I’d probably never buy but really love to look at; Khaite skirt in a great color and interesting rise-to-curve ratio; BG slyly uploaded this mini-sized Alexia bag from The Row for preorder here and nowhere else (not even The Row’s site)—I’ve already decided I’m definitely buying it (!), now just trying to pick between the reddish-brown and black; before the small-sized Alexia hit new arrivals, I was seriously considering the mini version of Balenciaga’s Rodeo; and this Prada georgette print skirt still hits.
MyTheresa
Pretty much every luxury brand is doing a wide-leg cord this season, but The Row’s are low-rise and have that cleft butt I need from a baggy pant…these are $990 but I’m seriously considering them knowing how much wear I’d get out of them; that Altuzarra Pierrot-collared knit I’ve been expecting has arrived, it’s so charming; great patent oxblood Birk 1774s; the Lemaire x Filt croissant bag is making me regret having bought the tote when it released the previous season; and what an extraordinary shape on this McQueen peplum jacket!
Nordstrom
These Maria McManus drawstring pants I saw Maria herself wearing along with the matching vest six months ago, around the time the first samples would have been ready…been looking out for them ever since; a Coperni halter dress in the style of undone pants—more wearable and less Glenn Martens-y than it sounds but sadly only two left and not in my size; the Miu Miu hotel slippers! I’m still in the flirting phase; a little heartbroken by this maximum-volume skirt from Dries’ last-ever women’s collection; a precious little dining-table gem of a The Row bag that’s 40% off; and Saks Potts jeans with that pleated waist construction I also love on these Magda Butrym pants…Khaite also does a pair.
La Garçonne
I kept expecting these Dusan pants to go on sale because they’re so fantastic but expensive, and now there’s one pair left in my size and STILL at full-price; this Toteme trench is on sale and its second season is fast approaching (I love a coat-and-flops look for fall); Mina Perhonen you will always be famous; another little something from Marie Adam-Leenaerdt, these ballet slides are kind of brilliant, no?; Auralee outdid The Row with this ultra-fine wool button-down; a day-to-day suede bag by Maeden for a great price (it’s under $600); and sorry to put a puffer on this list in AUGUST, but Lemaire is among the few making me wistful for colder weather.
Net-A-Porter
The RealReal
My Alaia kick has migrated from archive to new and back to archive, and I love the languid elegance of these viscose pants; under $300 for a Maggie Gyllenhaal-y Prada dress; I just watched “The New Look” so obviously I love this Dior organza midi dress; another sub-$300 dress from Margiela—never change, TRR; Margiela but for Hermes and it’s a lambskin overshirt for less than $800; and these 2003 Prada shorts have “Just for Fun” in their Instagram bio.
Other resale
A Prada FW98 dress with Mrs. Prada’s signature ironing creases; a Dubax hunting jacket from the ‘60s I stumbled upon via Pinterest of all places; Supriya Lele asymmetrical stretch pants…probably going to just get these once and for all; a vintage Gucci bag that appears to be the template for The Row’s Everyday bag; and Christaseya cords I ended up not buying because I missed out on the matching overshirt and apparently I’m not over it.
Misc saves
Those new Neous heels—the Ubens—continue to seduce me; a pre-order I put in with Conner McKnight in Spring should be arriving soon, and even before receiving it I’m already shopping for more from him, like this fishing sweater; a wearable solution to the Proenza Shouler twist-back gown I didn’t buy for lack of opportunities to wear it some months ago…in tank form; the designer behind the LA brand Airei turned me on to Norlha, who they’d just collaborated with on a yak capsule, and I’m convinced the Tibetian outfit is producing some of the most beautiful yarns and garments known to knitwear; Bally’s bell, imagined as a sunglasses case; and a great triangle tote in cotton-jute from Hender Scheme.
