250: "Help, I am in love."
AMA takes on wedding-season flats, "Bonjour Tristesse" on a budget, and shorts for all.
In AMA, you’re invited to Ask Magasin Anything: Give us your toughest shopping questions, we’ll pick six and curate specially tailored edits. This is the one send a month we limit to paid subscribers, so if you’d like to send us a question, read the complete responses, and support this newsletter, please consider upgrading now.
Two hundred and fifty is a nice, round number to be sending Magasin’s first-ever paid (kinda) send. I hope I do it right. Today, I take on wedding-season flats (which you can read about below, regardless of your subscription status) and shorts of every length and occasion for the gals. Em channels the 1959 film Bonjour Tristesse and explores fashion alts to garden clogs. And Louis takes on techy travel jackets and beyond-Baggies shorts for the boys.
If you asked us a question that we’ve included below, there’s a gift subscription coming your way. But from here on out, we’re only accepting questions from paid subscribers. So, to those of you who’ve already signed up or those who sign up any time in the next month, do your worst! Drop us a shopping Q in the comments or hit reply.
Question 1: Chic but comfortable flats for wedding season! I’m recovering from an injury and just can’t do heels. Something that would look good at a cocktail or black tie event.
Solved by
I’m proud to call myself a reformed kitten-heel abuser—my time among the flats has been blissfully chic and comfortable. I have personally found satisfaction across occasions with my Martiniano glove shoes, Emme Parsons crystal mesh ballerinas, and Margiela tabi flats. But I also know there is more to the world of heel-less shoes than ballet silhouettes.
My eye has been on these satin slides from The Row—also in red and leather—that I tried on in store recently and was delighted by the chopped-off peep toe (it doesn’t belie any toe cleavage, which makes the snipped tip all the more interesting). A related satin peeptoe from Le Monde Beryl—also in patent—is worth its own recommendation for a great right-angle slingback. As is this pair of Alaias with a sharp v-cut opening. And these Bottegas that I’ve posted about before but remain my holiest of grails.
Moving away from peep toes and into, I guess, slippers: these embroidered Bodes would make a surprising but not inappropriate choice. These ruched Totemes have a far wider application—you could kind of wear them with anything?—without being at all plain. And then these Nikki Chasin x The Wax Apple “theater shoes” come in a great array of colors and cost only $95 (I like the marigold best).
If your vibe is sportier or dedicatedly minimal, you could try these sock-like shoes from Softromaine—I imagine people will ask you where you found these unreleased The Rows.
