To me, this ties into what niche designers like Paul Harnden Shoemakers, Elena Dawson and Egg Trading have been doing – it's menswear influenced by the clothing worn by French peasants and Amish men; it's mining Catholicism for old vestments and surplices (I recently bought a billowing linen, lace edged smock that was probably worn by a French priest sometime in the last century); it's Evelina Dimova (@evdimova on IG); it's antique waistcoats and unbuttoned French cuffs and worn-in oxford shoes; it's Ann-era Ann Demuelemeester; it's about fabrics more than anything else (rough linen, luxuriously gathered cotton, the imperfect feeling of raw silk, grained leather, boiled wool, absolutely nothing synthetic, that would be missing the point); and yes, layers, always layers.
THIS!!!!! To your point, this is totally something that the Dover St/CDG universe has always espoused, and it's exciting to see it creeping outwards this season. and thank you for turning me onto evdimova on IG, so much fantastic material to be inspired by!
I KNOW what YOU mean <3 (thank you so much for the feature!) I'm very excited about the return of the hat, so much so that I just ordered one from Amy Downs.
i love this game of Amy Downs telephone—I read in Leandra's newsletter that Jalil heard about AD from Rachel Tashjian, and now we're all rightfully obsessed!
