interesting to include gifted items without differentiation, and to use the best available price instead of what you paid (if you paid)...feel like this skews the data a bit! methodology aside, it's fascinating to see what's filled someone else's cart over this past year.

to me, this exercise was less about getting cold hard numbers and more to suss out what newly introduced pieces into my wardrobe have proven most valuable. treating those gifted pieces the same as purchased ones gave me more insight into how i can better spend my money next year.

on the pricing front, that was a practical decision (didn't want to pull up a year's worth of receipts), but, based on my memory, the rates i listed didn't seem far off from what i spent at the time.

This is just so interesting and so thoughtful! Once upon a time when there were print magazines, I remember this feature on three women of different financial brackets that showed, laid out, every single thing they bought in a year; it’s still implanted in my brain. I would love to know what goes into your decision-making when it comes to splurge purchases like the pink Prada jacket!

I was just about to ask after the pink bday jacket, friend! I’m guessing NYC & the shit show rain is keeping that cutie indoors for now 💗💗

the prada jacket was a very late in the year purchase, so it hasnt had a proper run time to show its true cpu! i have high hopes for it though, i wore it twice last week (per my most recent post), and the wheels are spinning as to all else i can do with it next.

as far as how i know when to splurge...i wish there were a science to it. candidly, i think it has a lot to do with timing - i have an obsession, it lines up with something to celebrate, it lines up with my finances, etc. there's always a risk the fantasy i build around a piece won't match the reality that follows, but im hoping exercises like these help hone my "true" shopping style

Thank you for this! It made me start a 2024 spreadsheet to see what I'll buy this year. For the love of spreadsheet! You have an exquisite taste, and don't listen to what everybody else is saying, keep shining your light.

Love the data component of cost per wear. I just downloaded Whering at the recommendation of Anna Newton and I’m excited for it to calculate my cost per wear (among other things!)

i saw someone mention it in the chat! will be looking forward to the 2024 version of this post to see how everyone's tracking apps served them (ill be going spreadsheet route probably)

Is this an app?

I use Stylebook---the app featured in Articles of Interest. Love the functionality and love that it was created by a fashion couple in Brooklyn---good privacy policy. Not a free app looking to min your data.

I use Stylebook too and it’s the best! Really changed the way I shop.

Yes! I just downloaded it and I am already obsessed. It will also tell you how frequently you wear things and what your major closet color palette is!

About my 3rd time perusing (brain’s really firing on all cylinders 1st week back I guess 😂😂

So helpful

Similarities of low cpu:

deiji dress & any variety thereof deiji dresses & shirts sets )Like down to a quarter & now the knit suit I’ve started to repeat as well (pants I waited for sale.. so they go into 2024

The Gemsun & lido pieces .. traveled w & v low cPU.. continuing to wear (Cali)

I purchased the Maimoun massive cashmere octopus as well.. have been huddling in it but no outings yet so.. vote out.. but all the other EC I got obsessively I’m wearing everyday

The belted toteme blazer I got ~ 5-6 then lost my way.. so I’ll revive.

The bliss pants & the magliano sweats have been signature looks.. (much to the chagrin &!delight of the TSA.

The structured German coats .. appealing but I am blonde /blue eyed & can look a little like menacing in these ..

the sculpted top .. oh man .. tHAT was a find

Bought 2022 & stored if ,, refrained from buying at 820 or whatever & found I own in gray

Bought many pieces from DÔEn.. used & new & I don’t know WHAT this is about... like smocked mini dresses. I wear them for a few hours. Take off & consign

Even visited nyc flagship to see why I was buying them

Anyway very high cPu for that misadventure (they’re all on my dresscue rack now in Atwater

🥰

My bevy of long wool coats I wear ~ 3-4 day

Cream sportmac, khaki oatmeal lou

Lou & a grey lee Matthew’s

Toss em on & off but they all get a go

My riding stuff gets insane cPU e werino liners ($200?) easily worn 20x each & I have 4 of the heimat

Yup to janessa Leon totes (in the 40 x each & hard wear on a weird little net bag from metier (Indiana jones)

Flip flops I hac a go but bought 2 many..

Most costly high design pieces I am pretty vigilant about wearing a LoT... (for me that’s Prada & Phoebe Philo) .. very small specific purchases of basics (ok yea the grey wool skirt w the boingy flowers yex but have worn 6 x plus.. (we won’t mention the cpu until I get up to 2o.

Lately I’ve had a Phoebe Philo knit doing hard labor (life, zooms, dogs.movies (not barn yet) & now w no rain I’ll start to wear the zip boots

Oh

&

Olympic vest is ALWAYS lost (the Black .. it’s spectacular ..as are the dance pants wherever the F those have danced off to 🫣🫣

Xxxxooo

Ah. The LIBEROWE with the velvet details..

I’m busty, blonde, broad shoulders & my introvert has serious RBf so I worry about it looking too military on me rather Clara goes to the nyc ballet sweet..

I thrifted an Alice temperly for the look to try .. but then veered off into dr zhivago julie Christie va va va voom territory so that coat got cut..

I’ll try the LIBEROWE live in NYC when I’m home.. it’s so flattering on you (which has been a reliable indicator of high CPU’s 😂

The double faced wool toteme (mine is grey not brown) is SCHOOLINg me on proportion .. today I wore w oversized midnight PP blouse & let that big ruff stick out (liked) but then threw on those oversized Raey jeans w the dropped crotch & omg it was some street urchin BS so I made it worse by subbing in those pistachios Matteau fisherman pants (it’s LA so the weight was ok)..

the overall look SO SO crazy oversized & friend at barn (where I was spied dropping something off in the dark) & I was laughing at my own outfit said “well the fabrics are all really beautiful”

🤩 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❌⭕️ horse ladies = the best friends .. the fabrics ARE beautiful..

oh

Ballet flats.. for maximal damage to pants as I walked all over stables stepping on the hems & dragging them around like a blanket 🤣🤣🤣🥰🥰

It was the day for a plain Jean or quiet dark trouser

would love to hear what you find about your own wearing habits at the end of the year!!

Wow Laura - you should try Rule of 5! It's very emancipating. 5 new items per year, 4 second hand, lingerie and hosiery don't count. You can see more details on the Substack page

hah! five items a year. a great idea but in practice...could never be me <3

What are your plans for the items with the highest cost per wear?

knowing me, i will probably hang onto them for another six months to see if any occasion arises to rediscover them, and if not, i'll sell them

Thanks for sharing this---I found it helpful and an enjoyable kind of like that Joan Didion packing list ;-). Question----do you rotate out a broadly equivalent amount of things each year to deal with closet space? Wondering how your complementary out list looks?

Seeing all this CPU data made me reflect about my own stats. At some point if a CPU is above some threshold, it seems like it might be a miss of sorts. It means that was a very expensive day(s) you wore it---unlikely you got the full utility of it. Also low usage---high impact on environment, squatter in the closet, taking up head space. Perhaps this is obvious but I guess I have focused on the virtuous part of it...getting it down and thus seeing merit in high usage, high priced items.

Expand full comment
author

my out list is also pretty high! i hung onto more this year though, even putting up a rack in my bedroom once my closet couldn't take any more inbound stuff :) the high cpu items are definitely losses in those ways you mentioned. im hoping this exercise helps me better understand my wearing habits and brings those way down for future purchases!

I’m in an itinerant phase. The rolling rack situation is beyond. The number of racks (between LA tiny lodge/NYC apt & DTLA studio is... under 10. That’s all I’ll say. I did garde Robe storage in NY forever but forced myself to call everything home to roost for big edits.

Big side hustle in peddling /consigning/selling & gradually making headway (down one rack this week...)

It’s very “come to Jesus((insert favorite diety here)

My zooms for real job(s) are very carefully positioned .. trust me 🤣🤣🤣🤣⭕️❌

How do you like the A emery bias cut pants ? Love its cut but wondering if it’s a good purchase given that it’s made of tri-acetate

Expand full comment
author

i ADORE them. i actually prefer them to my silk laundry bias pants as they have a bit more heft. im a fan of acetates. i fold the waistband of the a.emery ones in by one turn as they are slightly too big on my waist (otherwise fit perfect), but it works like a charm
