165: Everything I've bought so far
Early Black Friday try-ons, still warm from my UPS guy's hands.
To my relief, I’ve been keeping the Black Friday ordering to a mortal clip. My ethos has always been about buying better stuff, not just more of it. So I’ve been really happy to have found a few pieces that assuage long-held desires rather than to have acted on impulse. Restraint is a muscle! Exercise it!
So far, I’ve bought five or six things, some of which are featured here, and others (like an Omniluxe mask…anyone who has one of these want to tell me if it actually works?) are just out of frame, laughing too. Another not pictured is a Róhe merino turtleneck that’s not itchy in the slightest, coming from someone with a third-generation wool allergy. Then, Skims boxers—SO soft?? And, with the help of a credit from The RealReal, I finally bought a Rimowa. If you thought you couldn’t stand me before...
On my close watch list, but not yet bought are Loro Piana’s Rebecca flats (on sale here but not in my size), a brown Bottega parka I just stumbled on today that’s down to $590 after an extra code, and the Commission bag I reallllly want and it’s under $400…might be my text target, tbh.
Anyway, one of the great pleasures of online shopping is opening your package and putting your new thing on straight away, which isn’t a very comfortable thing to do with a rolling suitcase, so I’ve left that one out. But all the rest, in the spirit of Black Friday, you’ll find styled below with existing pieces from my closet that are largely also on sale.
Baserange Off-White Ole Maxi Dress, $133 $190 (more in stock here and in blue stripe here) / Beaufille Black Vela Midi Skirt, $229 $440 / Everlane Knee-High Banana Heel Boot, $245 $350
It may be the nth time I’m making this threat, but when I do get around to doing my winter sarongs piece, this will be genesis of all other looks. I had imagined almost this exact outfit when I experimented with an Extreme Cashmere wrap on my visit to Maimoun, and it’s so satisfying to fulfill the vision. The exact Baserange shirtdress I tried on in store is here layered with my lovely new Beaufille skirt that dips elegantly down at one hipbone (the ecomm styling does it no justice). I’m obsessed with the shirtdress tails peeking out through the skirt’s slit.
Gap Men’s Mac Coat, $70 $118 / Soeur Sapphire Shirt, $145 (the shirt’s not on sale, but Soeur is offering 30% off on these items) / Auralee Indigo Hard Twist Jeans, $428 $370 (also available in gray-brown for $244) / Maryam Nassir Zadeh Olympia Wedges, various colors on sale from $312
How do I say this? I am keenly aware of the protein of my upper thighs, and these Auralee jeans have the effect of making my legs look the way they do in my head (which is closer to how they were when I was 13). I’m sure that’s enormously problematic, but it’s my body dysmorphia to do with as I please. Their loyally straight-cut, Jane Birkin-esque silhouette is hard to find these days (though A.P.C.’s been doing it for years), and it sits sophisticatedly amid the trimmer layers I’m leaning into this season.
Alex Mill Men’s Wright Cardigan in Chunky Cotton, $165 (not on sale, but you can see Alex Mill’s gift guide here) / Dion Lee Interloop Tailored Pant, $890 $1,270 / Rouje Abelia Sandals, $320 (not on sale, but Rouje is offering up to 40% here)
Every SSENSE sale for the last four or five seasons has had me navigating to the Dion Lee pants section to meditate on a pair of “lingerie” trousers I can never get myself to move on. I haven’t managed to pin them down, but I did have great luck at Dion Lee’s archive sale, where these Interloop pants were down to $250ish. The fit? Phenom. The fabric? Hearty yet skimming. Sexy details: unmatched. The archive sale is sadly over now, but they’re on sale nonetheless at Farfetch (and in a skirt version at SSENSE).
Veilance Black Tenia Blazer, $350 $500 / Veilance Black Khara Trousers, $245 $350 / Deiji Studios Beige 'The Knit' Vest, $245 / Jamie Haller The Penny Loafer in Black Patent, $565 (not on sale, but Jamie is running a super deep archive sale here)
I shared a few weeks back how taken I was with Veilance—Arc’teryx’s “citywear” line—and its improbably wearable nylon suits. Turns out, I was right in my suspicion that they’d fulfill a very real opportunity in my wardrobe to grow into a more self-knowing me. I wear it and I feel like Lydia Tár skiing into a board meeting where I’m the guest of honor and someone pours a glass of wine into my mouth and it’s so dark and juicy and rich. What a thing for a suit to do!
Deiji Studios Beige 'The Knit' Vest, $245 / Sophie Buhai Silver Medium Everyday Hoop Earrings, $171 $325 (note: these are not listed as “sale” but they are weirdly priced at half off at Matches compared to SSENSE)
The moment I decide I’m a gold-wearer, silver pulls me back in. (Maybe it’s an olive-tone thing? Maybe my boob theory is in play somehow?) A pair of Sophie Buhai earrings was irresistible on private sale at SSENSE, where they’ve jumped back to full price, only to be undercut by Matches, which is now selling them at SSENSE’s old sale price. I don’t deign to understand the mechanics of Black Friday, I’m just here to make us all gorgeously outfitted opportunists.

HA! “My body dismorphia to do with as I please!” I will take any jeans that do exactly as you said; make my legs look the way they do in my head. What a great endorsement!
Laura love.. just a bra under the deiji vest ? What is black fitted piece poking out?
I’ve been procrastinating around this item (until it sells out & I re-engage 🤌🏼🤌🏼
