098: Spring jackets, capris, and everyday jeans

Named for the large, vertical newspaper format, think of this weekly supplement as a shopping cheat sheet cribbed from far-reaching corners of the internet.

An item to set today’s mood: the Emily Dawn Long Black Kingsley Minidress.

A stop by Emily Dawn Long’s studio (which famously gives great mirror selfie) meant walking out with the Kingsley dress from her SSENSE capsule that I’ve been eyeing since our first interview at the end of summer last year. I threw it on over half of the outfit I walked in with, and we both kind of loved it with pants: a kismet solution until the weather allows it to be the only thing standing between you and naked. The slinky knit is really delicious, Tom Ford Gucci style, with a seductive liquid drape.

Spring? Oh you mean the optimal time to wear Bode’s strongest product category? This sky-blue quilted jacket is completely reversible, with a delicate floral flip side, and while it costs anywhere from $1,000 to $1,300, there’s one on Grailed for a few hundred less; this Carol Christian Poell kangaroo-leather shirt-jacket is the definition of a “grail” and, despite its high cost, is actually a very good deal compared to most $6,000ish listings from the voraciously collected Austrian designer; Tory season hath commenced, and this bodice-skimming tailored twill jacket for half off is case in point why everyone’s wearing the brand in ‘23; among the most fruitful brands to have recently emerged from the SSENSE universe, Fax Copy Express has another hit on its hands with this football-shouldered poly-canvas box coat; and while it’s technically a knit, the day will come when it will be warm enough to face the other side of the door with a more relaxed coverage attitude, and you’d be lucky to have this devastatingly lovely handmade jacket by Gabriele Skukas (the product of 70 hours’ worth of work) standing by.

Where else to start on capris than Italy, and the first collection that comes to mind is Prada’s SS99, from which this pair of shorts hails (and now costs only $135); a set of Dior monogram croppies for a few hundred less than what comparable styles are listed for elsewhere; the athleisure route offers great layerability (very Leandra), and these Alo Yoga ones are supposed to be the most comfortable possible things to wear on your lower half; the everyman’s capris are best sourced from thrift stores or brand-agnostic eBay hunts—search “taffeta” or “silk” for styles like this pair of Ralph Lauren Black Labels; and a pair of dressy Dries capris (more sizes here), for when the dress code calls for being the most chic and knowing bitch on the premises.

The best jeans tend to be vintage Levi’s 501s (here’s the exact pair shown above), which I like to buy four sizes up and tailor to be cropped at the ankle; my premium denim brand of choice is Agolde, which makes these baggy, low-waist AND barrel-legged jeans that look much better than styled here with a little kitten heel; a new acquisition, these System low-rise jeans have an absolutely magic butt that I’ve been looking for in a pair for years—a bisecting hike of fabric just between the cheeks that makes for the pertest shelf; and naturally, The Row Egli jeans in white, which changed the denim game altogether when they debuted for Fall ‘21—given the season, they’re hard to find these days, but scattered sizes are left at SSENSE (also in blue), Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom.
