089: Bitty bags, big bags, and even bigger bags
A bag of course—Jil Sander's Goji Mini—sets today's mood.
Named for the large, vertical newspaper format, think of this weekly supplement as a shopping cheat sheet cribbed from far-reaching corners of the internet.
An item to set today’s mood: Jil Sander Goji Mini Bamboo Bag.
One thing about me is that when I get something new and important, I’m going to talk about it way past the point that anyone cares to hear. So, yes, the bag I shared earlier this week is BACK, because just LOOK at her. My bamboo obsession (as documented in our Gucci bamboo bag-riddled Deep Winter Issue) has advanced with the acquisition of this Jil Sander Goji Mini in a pinkish-tan color I can lo longer find anywhere online. Its interior is entirely leather-lined, and it comes with a delicate strap that I’ll likely never use (bags like this and meant to be at least a little fussy). They are pricey, but a treat. And these last two remaining in chestnut brown at SSENSE are down to nearly 50% off.
You’re asking about…
evening bags
These Lemaire car-cover-esque beaded bags sold out from SSENSE almost right away last time I posted them here, but I’ve tracked one down at a comparable sale price on Vestiaire; I will eventually move on from my bamboo bag kink, but today’s not the day—not when a Tom Ford-era satin-covered Gucci one is going for under $300; the knit bag wave crashes onto the egg bag shore in this tender and elegant Isa Boulder Sphere Bag; French brand Fane, designed by an MNZ alum, satisfies minimalist tendencies while catering to our craving for thoughtful details as in this “Bra Bag”; and a pristinely kept Rick Owens quiver bag from SS19 is an opinion piece in leather.
laptop bags
I got a JW Anderson knit bag and used it for a year for carrying my laptop and miscellany, finding it to be the most comfortable strap I’d ever carried—this one is slightly different from my diamond-check style, but the jolly apples quite appeal to me hehe; I’ve talked about the Bottega Intecciato Hobo before, but the fact remains that it’s got to be one of the most useful, attractive, and versatile bags out there—if I didn’t already own one, I’d buy this deep blue version for half the going rate; my bid for the best investment bag: The Row Gabriel Tote in supple cream or black with super sensual folds along the top and sides; Mansur Gavriel’s Everyday Soft Tote also has some of that pillowiness in an insane candy-apple green (or other colors) for about a fifth of the price; and a Prada Re-Nylon and leather briefcase (Dione Davis’ recc) also skews investment, but you can luckily find used versions in the $400 range.
and weekender bags.
I have a puffy bag that I got for free from Mango last fashion week and it’s turned me on to the travel-bag-as-pillow trick that so many people already know and rely on—I found this one from Simonett, and it’s my cute upgrade wishlist item (that’s somehow only $165); this Jacquemus Le Papier 'Le Sac à Linge' Bag (on sale at SSENSE) has that high-quality canvas that gives it an army sack feel and will last through a ton of abuse; I discovered this Paloma Wool “Big Mari” canvas duffle just before assembling this list and it feels like kismet—it’s only $200, and I’m restraining myself from buying it because I have so many travel bags already, but maybe I should just do it???; the new Uniqlo U collection landed this week, and the various Lemaire-designed nylon bags all match the earthy, techy clothing like some organic fashion utopia; and one more bag I’ve written about ad nauseam because it’s THE BEST: this (currently on sale) Acne Studios East-West Oilcloth Bag that’s simply enormous and floppy and so so chic when drooping over the top of your rolling luggage or slouched over your shoulder.
