070: Let's have a look in their carts, shall we?
Seasoned shoppers are Cyber-buying Tekla, The Row, and design-y lamps.
As far as my own purchasing goes, what’s already obvious to most of you is that it all starts with SSENSE. Since Private Sale launched, so many potential timelines have passed through my cart, but all I’ve bought directly thus far is this high-voltage Pleats Please cardigan. This pair of Marnis was also a lets-do-it moment for me, wanting to solve my sunglasses problem once and for all, but instead of buying them on SSENSE, I found a cheaper pair on one of those crunchy optical sites (and here they are on Farfetch).
Over at Browns, some of the most compelling cases for dropping $1,000 on the spot (a Bottega intrecciato bag and Loewe leather bomber, for instance) sold out while I was meditating on the investment, but I was pleased to find a pair of sub-$300 Margiela tabi boots (also sold out now), which one IG commenter kindly volunteered “look like a bare foot.” Fair. But I think that’s half the appeal.
In putting together this week’s sale roundups, I also dropped some cash off at smaller stores with gripping discounts—a pair of sale-on-sale B Sides jeans and 30% off new-season Paloma Wool pants at Frances May’s sitewide sale.
All par for the course. What I didn’t expect but has become a theme this Black Friday season is how much I’ve shopped resale. Before all of the sales even began, I mulled on what I hoped to buy. When I realized that was a 1997 Junya Watanabe strapless dress (sold—to me!—but link for reference) that I’d had on ice, I went ahead and got it. Inspired by MNZ and Fax Copy Express’ versions, I bought a paper-thin raglan long-sleeve vintage tee from eBay, and for good measure, bid on a couple of J.Crew cashmere crew necks (I got them in gray and orange).
My shopping spate isn’t over, but it has reached the point where I’m starting to ask around and get inspired by others’ purchases. Scroll below the fold to see what these sale-shopping savants bought (so far).
Postscript: The spreadsheet of good things on sale that we started last week is still living, breathing, growing, and it’s up to 200+ active deals up to 89% off. Here it is once again, in case you need even more ideas for how to spend money right this instant.

“From Browns Fashion, I bought the Loulou Studio black straight leg jeans (a great winter pant) and the Tekla blue bathrobe. The robe was a brokered deal/Christmas gift—I just moved in with my bf and he would not throw out his stained white bathrobe until replaced by a far superior one. Tekla-voila.
From SSENSE, I bought two Justine Clenquet items: the silver Suzanne necklace and black Eddie tall boots. I will be in the UK this winter and am leaning in to a more-subtle sexy.
I wanted to buy the Wolford fatal dress but not seeing the private-public deal on my browser. It’s on my wishlist 🤍”

“I bought this cozy and feminine yet very cool Six Penny sofa. I’m moving to a brownstone in Clinton Hill this week so spending my Black Friday $ on home stuff.
Next up, I bought this wool coat from SEA. Perfectly fitted to wear with a sweater on a super chilly day, or a t-shirt when it’s more mild.
And finally, Net-A-Porter has an amazing home offering. They keep me cool! I bought these Soho Home mugs for the new digs. And then also slipped in these Mother leather trousers. Not on sale but I love them so who cares 😬”

“I stopped by the MNZ store today to get the Renato Sweater in Pollen, a very light gold. I missed out on it the first time around and was so happy that we were able to restock it. I bought the Medium—it’s better slightly oversized. I plan to wear it with camels and creams to brighten up my winter wardrobe.
I’ve also had this tab open for a few days before finally pulling the trigger. How great would these The Row stockings be under dresses and skirts? I’m definitely wearing this to a holiday party.”

“My husband and I bought a Flos Parentesi pendant lamp we've been eyeing forever. It's black and it goes with our Joe D'Urso-inspired '80s Instagram interior. I told a friend about their 30% off sale and they decided to buy the exact same thing.”

“Because the conversion rate from the yen to the dollar is so low and in favor of the USD, my Black Friday shopping primarily consisted of buying vintage pieces from Japan. I am a collector of Jun Takahashi’s Undercover and especially love SS06, “T”. Takahashi reconstructs T shirts into feminine A-line skirts and dresses in combination with graphics (a collaboration with Hysteric Glamour’s Nobuhiko Kitamura) of imagined German Progressive Rock bands. When I saw Look 21 for sale, I knew it had to be added to my collection.”

“I’ve been on the hunt to replace my everyday boots, and pointy toes have always held a soft spot in my heart. I love the construction of the heel on this Ann Demeulemeester pair—the height is also perfect and wearable on the daily.”

“I get fixated on items that ride the line between delighting and haunting me. I can never tell if what I latch onto is in good taste, but I mitigate the wildness by having a fairly orthodox attitude towards pragmatism: An item must enchant me, but it must also be (or seem) widely wearable and hardy.
For instance, these Salomon slides have been hanging out in my cart for the better part of a month, during which time their price dropped about $50—they aren’t going to crumple or snap the second I get my hands on them (like this grotesquely overpriced little number that a TikTok-er I follow tested out to awful effect). I have fallen arches and finally accepted a few years ago that I cannot go without supportive house shoes. Right now, my house shoes are beige Crocs with Jibbitz from my favorite anime. I’m leveling up.
I kind of blacked out when I saw the CdG holiday prices on The RealReal and when I came to, I’d acquired this top and these bottoms at dramatic markdowns. Foo and Foo makes excellent clothes, and this tank top with wires sewn into the sides literally infiltrated my dreams. I managed to sneak out of the MNZ online sample sale with an archival Vaquera skirt.
To end on a weird note, my family is dealing with some grim illness stuff right now, so I bought death-oriented Online Ceramics merch for both me and my little sister (my favorite person). I’ll need to channel OC’s cheerful, zen nihilism when I go home for the holidays this year.”

“This weekend was dedicated to collecting any bits needed to combine apartments with my girlfriend. For us, that’s the Floyd expansion pack to upgrade from a Queen to a King, a Sonneman-style obiter chrome lamp from Reuse America, and a set of wine glasses from West Elm (after searching high and low for reasonably priced, laser-cut stemware these are the ones I always go back to).
I’ve been trying to downsize my closet, despite a substantial haul at the Magasin sale last weekend (vintage Armani trousers, vintage Gap tank, and leather pants), but I can’t bring myself to close the tabs of pieces that I maybe want to double up on. The Line by K tops are the only “going out tops” I’ll buy into and are 30% off, the Ami Colé brow gel has the best hold and is 20% off, and about 17 options for extra long black coats I’ll need to commit to sooner than later—this Tibi on The RealReal being the frontrunner.”

“1. When I showed an illustrator friend of mine photos of my apartment recently, she pointed out that I apparently have a prejudice against the color blue. Guilty! I decided to buy these Alessi salt and pepper shakers to welcome a touch of it.
2. I inevitably buy something from Helmut Lang every year because it's always heavily discounted and I know I'll get a lot of use out of it. I have a lot of activewear half-zips, but this is one I'd wear out on the town, and it seems marginally more interesting than all my other black turtlenecks.
3. My friends are wine freaks and understandably like to drink their nice bottles out of nice glasses. One friend brought these Glasvin ones with him when he came over the other night, (like I said, freaks), and I enjoyed drinking out of them more than my Zwiesels, so I figured I'd save him the trouble next time. They're cheaper than Zalto's but still light and elegant—and on sale at Food52.
4. I recently splurged on the red heart-shaped Alaia bag and I thought these heart-shaped Mondo Mondo earrings would go nicely with it. (It's also possible I've gone overboard with the heart-shaped things, but whatever. I love love!)
5. I kind of regret this purchase because I absolutely do not need it, but I've been wanting this flame-print Priscavera shirt for years and the price was finally right.
6. I also bought Babaa merino wool sweats and went waaaay too hard on the Posse sale because of your newsletter! But I can't really vouch for any of these items yet and anticipate that I'm going to send a handful of them back... Oh and I bought Sheertex but that's boring.
And will someone please tell me when these Alaia boots and these Manolos go on sale?? (I'm a size 40.)
AND IF YOU ARE A SIZE 39 BUY THESE NOW!! (Actually, if you're a size 39.5 because I think they run a half size small.)”
I may earn some money if you make a purchase through one of the links above. If you liked this post from Magasin, why not share it?
