056: The jig is up
Sale season is ending, plus an exclusive MNZ capsule, Levis x Guizio, and rare designer archives at Moda.
Without breaking any embargoes, let me start by saying the days of our favorite sale are numbered. In less than a fortnight, discounts will drop to their lowest points, enormous volumes of product will be depleted, and at long last the SSENSE sale will conclude its giving season. (It’s giving season.)
As it has for a baker’s dozen Mondays, today marks an even deeper dip in prices across the site, among the last we’ll experience until the event starts back up again. (I’m projecting Private Sale will roll out mid-November with general sale launching just in time for Black Friday.)
Tragedy strikes elsewhere in the ecomm realm, too. Net-A-Porter’s sale is concluding its similarly long and generous run today, with a bonus 15% off incentive across most inventory. And Matchesfashion’s extra 20% off coupon is a drum tapping away to its sale’s own funeral march.
This end-times conspiracy between the big three—this close to fashion week—naturally catalyzed a wee spree. An Elena Velez dress (last one) and Skims bodysuit from SSENSE, and The Row boots and knit vest from Net-A-Porter. Elsewhere on the internet, my dollars have been consciously uncoupling from me and finding themselves in bed with Vestiaire Collective, and so comes my way a nylon Prada Cleo bag and surrealist Robert Goossens (‘70s jeweler for YSL, Chanel) earrings.
I have an inkling my acquisition sprint isn’t done just yet, so while I parse through any and every sale page, I’m collecting some of the best deals in the bullet points below.
What’s new
If you’ve been neglecting the Latest Arrivals pages in favor of the sale squares over on the left, you probably didn’t notice the exclusive Maryam Nassir Zadeh capsule pieces that just landed at SSENSE. Ten women’s pieces and eight men’s feature familiar silhouettes from the brand’s recent collections done up in new shades of steely grey-blue, buttercup yellow, smudged-out olive green, and inky navy. The hero jacket of the collection is for some reason a whole $840 cheaper in the men’s section, but aside from the odd discrepancy, it’s a tempting little collection to want to possess.
Celebrity stylists’ de facto source for tough-to-come-by archival pieces, Tab Vintage, is hosting a trunkshow of collector’s items via Moda Operandi. Lots of things that can be referred to as “The”: The Comme des Garcons hand set, The Tom Ford for Gucci velvet swirl pants; The Vivienne Westwood François Boucher corset. Even if the prices are understandably more 1stDibs than Depop, you’ll at the very least garner a fresh set of keywords for your eBay saves.
Levi’s has made tough work of tapping collaborators that fall outside family-friendly mainstream appeal (most past partners could easily have been pegged to back to school campaigns, lets say), but its latest with Danielle Guizio is starting to get somewhere. The low-rise and baggy boyfriend jeans, plus the corset top, are finally something to sext home about, but the denim bolero sleeve piece is Levi’s history in the making, already an essential exhibit in the “2020s does the ‘80s” retrospective we’re staging in real time.
You may have gathered from the sheer real estate it’s granted on site, but Essentials, the affordable basics brand from Fear of God’s Jerry Lorenzo, is SSENSE’s top-selling label by a landslide. A new wave of monochromatic building-block garments created to be in regular rotation through fall just landed in the men’s and women’s sections, including the expected ath-lounge type hoodies and tees, but also some more inquisitive styles like an Aran knit and sweatshirt dress.
Maryam Nassir Zadeh has launched a private NFT network called CLUB MNZ. For $200, you get a collectible of sorts (maybe a picture of a clay pot?), plus apparently access to fashion show invites, exclusive events, sample sales, priority access to Maryam’s DMs, and other odds and ends I’m having a hard time situating. I know I am supposed to step up in just this occasion and find out for the girlies exactly why and what the hell. But I’m not about to spend $200 on this. If there’s more I can find out for free, be certain I’ll share it with you then. For now, she and her 24 club members can keep their secrets.
There’s also: Closely behind Rosie Assoulin and Sandy Liang, Susan Alexandra is the latest New York cool-girl brand to launch bridal; Mansur Gavriel launches a Twist bag capsule; not news per say, but Tory Sport’s tennis section remains the best destination for US Open-themed attire on, off, or away from the court altogether; Maria McManus Fall 2022 collection is now live; Exponent Beauty launches Rewind Retinol Superior Serum for all the beautiful, heady beauty heads out there; Martine Rose’s AW22 first release has hit homepage; Gohar World releases the Ricotta Candle, a trompe l’oeil wax sculpture in the style of a formetta-shaped cheese; Miaou’s second fall delivery is live and latex-abundant; Warby Parker launches the handcrafted Color Block edit; Gola X J.Crew add to their small range with a few new exclusive styles; Eastpak has found its latest collaborator in Jun Takahashi’s Undercover, with a line of backpacks, weekenders, and crossbodies; Salvatore Ferragamo introduces The Aura Bag; and an exclusive Paris Georgia capsule is coming to SSENSE, but for a few more hours, you can shop it privately on the PG site before it reaches the Montréaler masses.
What’s on sale
Matchesfashion’s sale is broadly eligible for an additional 20% off discount using EXTRA20, which is obviously quite a tempting proposition considering discounts already reach up to 80% off. Top level, here’s a link showing an edit of designers I’ve found to be especially off-priced on this platforms. But some of my favorite specific deals include the Acne shearling clogs in black, Lauren Manoogian knit cargo lounge pants, these The Row knee-high boots for 70% off (before the extra discount), the same The Row knit vest I just got at Net at a similar discount, a Lisa Yang knit vest that’s a close visual match for much less, and an Elder Statesman tie-dye cashmere sweater that’s around the lowest I’ve seen seen priced new.
SSENSE, which we’ve each likely combed through at least a dozen times, released new discounts today ahead of its sale’s looming finale. If you’ve exhausted the Jacquemus and A. Roege Hove markdowns, might I suggest: an Engineered Garments ripstop cardigan jacket, Wales Bonner x adidas pants for under $100, a magical brushed mohair By Marlene Birger coat, an exclusive Saks Potts bikini, a Martine Rose signature sweatshirt, Janie Korn candles, itty bitty MNZ boy shorts, and the most divine Jil Sander polo imaginable.
Today is the last day of the Net-A-Porter sale, and like the SSENSE sale, when it goes underground, it’s gone for a while. While you can, get this Commission polo I’ve been flirting with for seasons, these Wandler knee-high flat boots or these slightly heeled thigh-high Toteme ones, or the Khaite v-neck you’ll own forever.
Miami-based concept shop Simonett, currently housed at The Standard Miami Beach, might have one of the most consistently concise buys I’ve shopped. Maybe you know it for its viral Nanu top, the knit multi-way that blew up during the pandemic, but the truth is, it’s a bit of a holdover from another time. Owner Simonett Pereira has since expressed that her true passion lies on the curation side. And I have to agree, she’s fantastic at it. The shop’s summer sale, even though it’s being quickly depleted by the real heads, offers urgency-inducing pieces from Ottolinger, Coperni, Saks Potts, Chopova, Tigra Tigra, and Ancuta Sarca at singular sale prices.
There’s also: Mansur Gavriel is retiring its cloud clutch to make way for new versions—shop the classics at 40% off; LN-CC’s private sale is ending soon, so take an extra 20% off already-up-to-70%-off pieces with LN-FINAL20; CUUP is running a rare and deep-cut sale on bras, underwear, and swim. Prices look to be $39 for tops and $10 to $17 for bottoms across the board, ringing up to 60% discounts on their core silhouettes; the Labor Day home sales are already percolating, with Sijo Home unlocking 20% off sitewide on its yummy sheet sets and more with WEEKEND; Elleme’s summer sale goes up to 60% off on shoes, bags, and RTW; Coach Outlet is up to 70% off right now, and you can get an extra 20% with TICKTOCK; Luar is hosting its first ever annual sale; Scandi sunglass brand Chimi is up to half off for the last few summer days; Realisation Par’s entire site is 25% off with AQUARIUS; funky-sexy fragrance brand Heretic Parfum is hosting a “Dirty Days of Summer” sale with discounts on rotating categories—today’s is 50% off all candles; get an extra 40% off all Madewell sale; FWRD’s August sale just shot up to 75%, so go make Kendall proud; Tory Burch, too, is hosting a bonkers summer sale including some fab tennis pieces; get 20% off almost everything beauty and wellness at Space.NK; Simon Miller’s Labor Day sale is open and up to 60% off; take an extra 10% off all Rus sale; and Kindred Black’s cool, giftable glass- and ceramic-bottled beauty is 30% off to make space for new concepts.
