046: What we bought once the SSENSE floodgates opened
Here's what a bunch of chic types got on sale in week one.
When I said I went through 613 pages of the SSENSE sale, well, no I didn’t. I’m clearly several layers deep into the sale’s mantle, but even I don’t have the stamina to overcome that guaranteed miner meme feeling. There’s no doubt I’ve parsed through thousands of products—from which I ended up buying this JW Anderson bag (that I wrote about in last week’s roundup), a Skims bra, and a Marine Serre tank and bra—but talking to excellent shoppers in my circles has exposed the blind spots in my semi-methodical sift.
Not only that, but since the sale launched, SSENSE has added even more items, and what I said about some of the discounts and included merch not feeling like “got ‘em” deals has been wholly remedied. With the inclusions multiplied, there’s even more to gain from outside input.
Instagram mutuals who responded to my Story poll bought everything from my recommendations of the Esse Studios strapless top and Justine Clenquet earrings, to investment pieces like The Row boots, to savvy finds including a Helmut Lang tank, Elenza Velez trousers, Heliot Emil top, Marge Sherwood hobo bag, Jacquemus “La Chemise” shirt, Pleats Please pants, and pieces from Praying.
Still curious about people’s credit card charges (what else is new?), I reached out to a few choice buyers and got the juicy info I sought. Read about their purchases, in their own words, below.

“I recently dyed my hair bright red, and my bed linens were the latest casualty of that decision. I ordered a fresh set of crisp white Tekla percale bedding (to keep things dangerous) and then saw my favorite activewear brand @livetheprocess was on sale, so I threw in their nude bodysuit and Jet top I’ve been wanting for a min. THIS IS MY THIRTIES.”

“I’m a sucker for Jacquemus—the sizing makes me feel bad about myself (lol truly—you can put this), but I love the fabrics and styles, so I’ll continue to buy, wear, and support. [I bought the blue ‘La Chemise Nutte’ shirt and the blue 'La Maille Ascu' top], I also bought the pink and black ‘La Maille Ascu’ but they don’t look to be on sale anymore. And I got this 'La Chemise Jean' shirt for my man!

“If last weekend’s weather was any indication of what this summer has in store, the only way to get through sticky New York City heat is by wearing as little clothing as possible. For me, that’s tiny tops and bodysuits, nearly naked sheer dresses and skirts. I’ve had my eyes on this Jacquemus knit top for that reason; the low price point and limited quantity were convincing enough that I purchased it on the first day of the sale. I also bought this KNWLS beige tactical bustier I’d been trying to track down for ages.”

“I got the I’m Sorry by Petra Collins white Jake baby t-shirt and I am obsessed with it. I saw a photo of Chloe Cherry wearing it, and it called to me immediately. As a sober woman who just quit smoking, I have only one vice left to me: gossip. I’m never malicious, hurtful, or mean, but man do I love knowing the tea, and so this shirt needed to come live with me and there was no question about it.”

“I actually had to remove a ton from my cart because I’m traveling and was diving in too intensely, lol. I decided I had to go on classics from Christopher Esber 😇 I got the one shoulder Fran top in black and the pleated long skirt in black 🤍”

“A perfect hoodie is hard to find, and I've had my eye on the perfectly shaped Eckhaus Latta hoodies for a while. My wishlist was bursting at the seams prepped for the sale, and I was very pleased that this navy cropped number went into it. It's perfect; dreamily soft, cozy, but works with a high-waisted trouser as it's cropped, and I can't stop wearing it with my favorite Hermes vintage trousers and MNZ slides.”

“On the first day of SSENSE's private sale I pulled the trigger on Bode's classic House Shoe, as well as their lace up County Clare—both guaranteed to be staples as the weather's warming up. I also purchased the ever-so-buttery Lemaire Croissant bag in a cricket hue, which I've had my eye on for the past couple of years. My biggest tip for shopping the SSENSE sale is to immediately swoop up styles that never get marked down and have very limited inventory—SSENSE will change up the inventory on sale as the weeks go by.”

“As a Pisces, I love a good cry, and it feels almost too on the nose to have had this Pushbutton top, tears and all, sitting in my cart for the past couple of weeks. The sale was the last push I needed to buy it. It’s just the perfect top to express my innermost feelings, and I know it’ll add an unexpected twist to all my super mini skirt outfits this summer.”

“Well-made activewear that balances form and function is always top of mind for all my clothing purchases. The comfort, utility, and textile technology is the reason Stone Island fills half my closet. [I bought this turtleneck and this jacket.] You can’t go wrong with a simple navy sweater from Margiela. I picked up another [plus a Pas Normal jacket], they’re a wardrobe staple.”
